PS5 vs Xbox Series X Repair Costs in Glasgow: The Honest Comparison
Common faults, HDMI port repairs, turnaround times, and what you'll really pay at GET Repairs vs sending it to Sony or Microsoft.
If your PS5 or Xbox Series X has died, the first decision isn't where to repair it — it's whether the manufacturer route is worth it. We repair both consoles every week at our Glasgow workshop, so this guide is the real-world comparison we wish existed when we started: faults, prices, and timelines, side by side.
The most common faults we see
PlayStation 5
- HDMI port damage — by far the #1 fault. The port sits flush with the case and a knock on the cable bends the pins or rips the port off the board.
- No power / blue light of death — usually power supply or motherboard.
- Overheating shutdowns — dried liquid metal or fan failure.
- Disc drive won't accept/eject — common on launch-era PS5s.
- Controller stick drift — DualSense drift is its own category.
Xbox Series X
- HDMI port damage — same story as PS5, slightly less common because the port is recessed.
- Disc drive failures — grinding noises, won't read discs. The Series X drive is notoriously hard to source.
- APU overheating / green screen of death — usually thermal paste degradation.
- Power brick issues (internal PSU on Series X — full board swap territory).
- Controller bumper and stick drift.

Repairability: which one is easier to fix?
Both consoles are repairable, but they're built differently:
- PS5 opens up cleanly. The side panels pop off, the fan and shielding lift away, and the motherboard is accessible without much fuss. HDMI port micro-soldering is straightforward for a trained technician.
- Xbox Series X is denser. Getting to the motherboard means removing the internal PSU, fan stack, and a sealed RF shield. Disc drives are paired to the motherboard, so a drive swap also needs a firmware transfer.
Practically speaking: PS5 HDMI repairs are slightly cheaper because they're faster. Xbox disc drive jobs are where the real labour is.
Why the manufacturer route usually isn't worth it
Sony and Microsoft both run flat-fee out-of-warranty programmes. They're convenient, but:
- You pay 2–3× the cost of a local repair.
- You're without your console for 1–2 weeks, sometimes longer.
- You often get a refurbished swap unit, not your original console — so your save data on internal storage is gone unless you've backed up to the cloud.
- Microsoft in particular will often refuse a repair on disc-drive faults and just send you a digital-only swap.
